Day 2

By Friday the gang had all arrived. The Zollingers (Clair, Shari and Nat) and the Penrods (Paul, Lolly, Arrielle, Teal, Eden, Talon and Lolly's sister Dina).

Clair agreed to cook his awesome breakfasts in exchange for others taking care of the evening meals.

We agreed to sit around the table and eat them

Arielle got homemade strawberry jam all over her face

Friday night we cooked Tri-Tip (a cut of meat that I never saw in Utah, but is very popular in California) rubbed with BRITU dry rub. It turned out OK, considering I dropped it on the ground while cooking it.

We had a great time sitting around the campfire both day and night

Sofi was entertaining as always, whether teaching "Nanna" Tai Chi

Or just being her loving self

Shari spent many hours giving rides to all the kids on the motorcycle they brought down

On Saturday we went hiking out near the East entrance, Kiah and Dina watch

Talon slide down the rock while Arielle empties sand from her shoes

Lolly and Paul just look dazed

And Sofi just hung out on the rocks

We then went on one of our favorite small hikes that is not on any map and that Kiah and I just stumbled on last year. We call it our secret slot canyon. It is not too big, or too hard, but it is just right, with the perfect combination of scrambling to keep the heart pumping.

In the secret canyon with the Penrods.

See how skinny it gets, if you look way down at the bottom middle of the photo you can see us posing. One thing I want to do next year is see if I can climb to the top. As it nears the back of the slot canyon, you can slowly pick your way up the wall and with someone to help I think you could make it to the top. Something to look forward to.

The sunsets were, as always beautiful
