Up close to Santa Cruz Island, where we did our first dive. Actually when we arrived at the first proposed location the Captain told us the water was silty green with crappy viz, so we headed to the other end of the Island to search for a better location. This took some time and delayed our first dive and overall time out. The second location we came to was noted as still not great but we dropped anchor and everyone jumped in the water. The visibility sucked, it couldn't have been more than 4-6 feet, it was like you were in a sand-storm It was just nasty.
The first dive, your always just excited to get in the water again, but pretty soon Hank I were just kind of bored... Since we weren't hunting and didn't have other tasks to occupy us, we set out exploring. I set navigation due east from the boat which was directly towards the shore and it was mostly uninteresting sand with an occasionally rock cropping and some kelp, but mostly just blah. The fact that you couldn't see more than 5 feet made it all the more bleak. Hank did manage to point out a rather large gray crab, that was surprisingly strong and could twist much more than I anticipated and nearly pinched me a couple of times. We stayed out as long as we could and then after surfacing to gain our bearings we took and heading and made it back to the boat. First dive, ehhh not so great.
